Looking back at his breakthrough season this year, Eubanks recently gave an interview to Sports Illustrated. During this interview, he gave a special mention to his ‘tough win’ against French tennis player Gregoire Barrere at the Miami Open. Here’s what he said when he was asked to look back on this year and reveal his predominant memory.

Christopher Eubanks began by saying, “Oh, that’s a tough one. Maybe Miami, third round [against] Grégoire Barrère, just because I’ve never in my life felt that much emotion on a tennis court—and still haven’t. Even winning Mallorca wasn’t as emotional as I was right after that third-round match. Even Wimbledon quarter, I wasn’t nearly as emotional, kind of smiling and laughing and going about it.” Following this, Eubanks went on to reveal the speciality of his match against Barrere. 

Eubanks added, “But after that match with Barrère—we had multiple rain delays, late into the night, a lot of starting and stopping, I was pretty much back-against-the-wall in the second set breaker. [Editors’ note: He was down 2–6.] I was able to fight back and win that, and then to find out after the match that put me in the top 100.”

Christopher Eubanks said that this positive result in Miami had helped him to improve his rankings and secure a place at the bigger stages of the game. He got quite emotional after the win.

Christopher Eubanks’ emotional breakdown after entering the Top 100

After multiple rain delays during the match, when the match finally ended, the cameraman caught some of the beautiful moments featuring Christopher Eubanks. He had won the match in straight sets by a margin of 6-3,7-6 against the French. But more than the margin, his realization of being among the top 100 players and reaching his maiden Masters 1000 R16 made his day.

Eubanks put his hands on his head as if he couldn’t believe what had just happened. Then he went on to hug his South African coach, Ruan Roelofse. The two-time ACC Player of the Year then headed towards the bench and sat down with a towel on his face. His emotions were portrayed through his eyes as tears rolled down his cheeks.
