Season 2 of the Netflix live-action One Piece adaptation is on the way, and there's already plenty of cast, story, and release date predictions and teases when it comes to what's next for Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates. Based on the One Piece manga and anime, the live-action Netflix show tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates. The first season saw Luffy get the gang together — despite Zoro and Nami's initial hesitation — and set out to find Gold Roger's treasure, the One Piece, on the Grand Line.

Since it's based on the manga and anime by Eiichiro Oda, there's already much to discuss for the next season of One Piece on Netflix. The live-action One Piece season 2 would follow the events from the first, which covered the manga's East Blue Saga. Monkey D. Luffy has sworn to become a great pirate, and by the end of One Piece season 1 is on the way to achieving his goals by getting his own wanted poster, ship, and crew. One Piece season 2 follows the next arc in the manga and anime, the Arabasta Saga, showing the first legs of the Straw Hat Pirates' journey to the Grand Line.

Live-Action One Piece Season 2 Recent News

The latest live-action One Piece season 2 news came in September 2023 when Netflix officially announced the renewal of the show. The confirmation came via an official Netflix YouTube channel, and was delivered by none other than Eiichiro Oda himself (via an animatronic Den Den Mushi). Oda also teased the appearance of Chopper, the Straw Hats' Doctor, in the second season. Of all the One Piece characters due to be introduced in season 2, it is Chopper who fans of the manga and anime are perhaps the most excited for, and it's clear that Oda knows it.

The creator of the original One Piece manga thanked viewers of the live-action adaptation for watching and all the praise the show received, before confirming that season 2 is indeed happening. The confirmation that Netflix has renewed One Piece for season 2 was received incredibly well online, but this is unsurprising given how successful the first season has been for the streamer, with many remarking that it's their first truly successful live-action Anime adaptation.

The Netflix Live-Action One Piece Is Renewed For Season 2

Netflix has renewed One Piece for season 2. The confirmation came in September 2023, two weeks after the show's premiere on August 31. Netflix renewing One Piece for another season was somewhat unsurprising, though the news was still incredibly well received. One Piece received incredibly positive reviews and has been a hit with subscribers, sitting at 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and the audience score is even higher at 94 percent.

Live-Action One Piece Season 2 Production Status

A Netflix One Piece season 2 release date won't come until late 2024 at the earliest. It is more likely that the live-action One Piece release date might not be until 2025. Comments from One Piece producers Becky Clements and Marty Adelstein have suggested a 12-18 month release window from September 2023, which means One Piece season 2 could debut between September 2024 and March 2025.

Speaking to Variety shortly after the incredibly successful debut of the first season, Tomorrow Studio president Becky Clements and CEO Marty Adelstein revealed that development had already started on the next live-action One Piece season, and that there's even a possible release window. Tomorrow Studio is one of three production companies behind the Netflix live-action One Piece, with both Clements and Adelstein listed as producers.

Adelstein revealed that scripts for One Piece season 2 are ready, with Clements suggesting a 12-18 month release window for One Piece season 2 could be possible. This would put the One Piece season 2 release date somewhere between September 2024 and March 2025. However, this is entirely dependent on the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, as production on the next season of the live-action One Piece can't begin until these are resolved. While the scripts are reportedly ready, it's likely they were completed before the WGA strike, and no amendments or alterations can be made until after the strikes are resolved.

Live-Action One Piece Season 2 Cast

The Netflix One Piece season 2 cast will mostly bring back characters from the first season in the main roles. The Straw Hat crew will almost all surely be back. Captaining the Going Merry in the One Piece cast as Monkey D. Luffy is Iñaki Godoy. Mackenyu Arata is his second-in-command, Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd (Fear Street Part Two: 1978) portrays the ship’s navigator, Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson (Grey's Anatomy) plays the crew’s sniper Usopp, and Taz Skylar (The Lazarus Project) takes on the role of the chef Sanji.

Also expected to return in season 2 are Vincent Regan as Garp, Morgan Davies as Koby, Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, Armand Aucamp as Bogard, Jeff Ward as Buggy, and Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida. There will also be a lot of new characters introduced that the next season of the live-action One Piece adaptation will need new actors to fill. There haven't yet been any casting announcement for new One Piece characters in the season 2 cast. There are still 3 Straw Hat Pirates due to join the crew in season 2 — Chopper, Nico Robin, and Jinbe (although Jinbe's appearance may not be until after the next season).

How The Live-Action One Piece Ending Sets Up Season 2

The first season of One Piece on Netflix ended with a giant battle between the Straw Hat crew and the Arlong Pirates. With Arlong a ruthless and powerful pirate leader, Monkey D. Luffy and his crew had a tall hill to climb. The good news is that the season ended with Monkey beating Arlong one-on-one while his crew fought Arlong's crew outside. The Straw Hat crew then all name their goals at the end, and it all fits perfectly together to make them a perfect team working in sync. The season also ended with Monkey finally getting his face on a wanted map with a bounty of $30,000,000, meaning it is the highest bounty in East Blue.

This sets up a series of things that should happen in the Netflix One Piece season 2 story. For one thing, every pirate and bounty hunter in existence will want to find and bring in Monkey to earn that monstrous reward. There was a hint at that in the finale when a mysterious person burned a hole in Monkey's face on the wanted poster. This is likely Captain Smoker, a powerful Marine captain. There also looks to be a union forming between Alvida and Buggy to bring down Monkey as well. Finally, the Straw Hat crew has a lot of plans, including finding the All Blue, traveling the world, and becoming the greatest swordsmen, warriors, and pirates in the world.

There were also mentions of Baroque Works, foreshadowing that the villain will play a role in the future of One Piece on Netflix. While Baroque Works wasn't featured heavily until later in the Manga, it seems like the live-action One Piece wants to set them up as the big bad. The series looks like it will have the Straw Hats fighting their way through various villains until they reach the top — which is Baroque Works, going from enemies like Mr. 5 all the way up to Crocodile. This was an interesting development, since it sets up the adaptation to go far beyond the next chapter of the One Piece manga and anime than season 2 would allow.

Live-Action One Piece Season 2 Story

The Netflix One Piece season 2 story is likely to follow the events from the Manga series. The first season followed the East Blue Saga and then went into some of the Loguetown Arc. It looks like the live-action One Piece season 2 story will probably finish off the Loguetown Arc and then continue on to the Arabasta Saga, which is the second saga of the Manga following the East Blue Saga. When it comes to finishing off the Loguetown Arc, the Straw Hats will have to battle Captain Smoker, which was teased in the season 1 finale but also have to fight off enemies wanting the bounty. Monkey D. Dragon is also introduced here.

As for the Arabasta Saga, this had 117 chapters, so it is unclear how much would appear in the Netflix One Piece season 2 story. Of course, the East Blue Saga was 100 chapters and only has the last section remaining to play out. As for big moments that the Straw Hats could face, these include their ship getting swallowed by a giant whale, the introduction of Mr. 9 and Ms. Wednesday (both from Baroque Works), an island full of dinosaurs, and the eventual introduction of the evil Baroque Works leader Crocodile, who is part of a massive civil war in Arabasta.
