Flavored lubes should be made with food grade ingredients and state whether they're safe for ingestion. "If you wouldn't eat it—then you should avoid it," says Vukovic.

Make sure to steer clear of any products that incorporate glycerin, glycol, hormones, parabens, propylene, and sugar. Some of these ingredients may throw off the pH balance of the vagina and run the risk of developing a yeast infection.

If you want your lube to be on the sweeter side, check for artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose or saccharin, which are less irritating than sugar.
