The Skyscrapers & 9 More Forgotten WCW Tag Teams With WWE Hall Of Famers

During the time that both WWE and World Championship Wrestling existed at the same time, there were a lot of crossovers in terms of wrestlers jumping ship from one company to another. When it comes to wrestlers leaving WCW for WWE, there are several that failed to catch on during their first run in WCW only to become big stars in WWE, including Steve Austin, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall.

Looking at WCW’s tag team division, there are a number of forgotten tag teams that actually feature some big names who’d go on to receive Hall of Fame rings from WWE. Let’s take a look at 10 of those teams, and what they accomplished in WCW.

10 The Skyscrapers

Founded in 1989, The Skyscrapers were initially composed of Sid Vicious and Dan Spivey, both very tall men, neither of whom are in the WWE Hall of Fame. After Sid got injured during a match with The Steiner Brothers, a new tall guy was brought in to replace him and keep the Skyscrapers going: a rookie dubbed “Mean” Mark Callous.

This new version of the Skyscrapers wouldn’t last long thanks to Spivey’s abrupt departure from WCW, and Callous would move on to WWE in 1990, becoming The Undertaker.

9 The West Texas Rednecks

A country music-themed faction seemingly organized to feud with the rap-themed No Limit Soldiers, the West Texas Rednecks boasted 2007 Hall of Famer Curt Hennig (a.k.a. Mr. Perfect). But the Rednecks’ devoted tag team was brothers Barry and Kendall Windham, the latter of which would also become a Hall of Famer as part of the Four Horsemen.

It was on an August 1999 episode of Nitro that the Windham brothers defeated Harlem Heat for the Tag Team Championship, holding the belts for 20 days before dropping them back to Booker T and Stevie Ray at Fall Brawl ‘99.

8 Pretty Wonderful

In 1993, then-current Horsemen member Paul Roma began a path to a heel turn, disregarding and even attacking tag team partners before aligning with “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff. Together, they became the heel tag team Pretty Wonderful.

Together, Roma and Orndorff enjoyed two tag title runs in 1994, with one lasting 70 days and the other lasting only 24 days. These two reigns would be the last major title wins for Paul Orndorff, who’d be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.

7 The Insiders

While Kevin Nash famously tagged with Scott Hall as The Outsiders in WCW, in 2000 and 2001 he had a different partner in homegrown WCW star and fellow future WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page.

As The Insiders, DDP and Nash enjoyed two reigns with the Tag Team Championship, trading the titles with The Perfect Event — Chuck Palumbo and Shawn Stasiak. The Insiders’ second reign, lasting 28 days, would be the penultimate tag title reign in WCW before WWE bought the company.

6 The Enforcers

Following yet another Four Horsemen break-up, Arn Anderson was thrown together with Larry Zbyszko, who had recently departed from the failing American Wrestling Association, becoming the tag team The Enforcers.

Together, they’d defeat Bill Kazmaier and Rick Steiner in a tournament final to capture the WCW World Tag Team Championship, holding the belts for 75 days before losing them to Ricky Steamboat and Dustin Rhodes in a rousing match at Clash of the Champions 27. Both Anderson and Zbyszko would become WWE Hall of Famers in the 2010s, with Anderson getting inducted in 2012 while Zbyszko was inducted in 2015.

5 The Jersey Triad

Before The Insiders, 2017 Hall of Fame inductee Diamond Dallas Page was part of another forgotten partnership. In mid-1999, DDP formed The Jersey Triad — sometimes just called The Triad — alongside Chris Kanyon and Bam Bam Bigelow.

Together, Page, Kanyon, and Bigelow held the WCW Tag Title two times, defending the belts via the Freebird Rule before dropping the belts one last time to Chris Benoit and Perry Saturn. Eventually, DDP would turn face and feud with Kanyon and Bigelow.

4 Doom

Fans likely remember 2012 Hall of Famer Ron Simmons best from his time as part of the Nation of Domination and his tag team with Bradshaw, with his 1986 to 1994 run in WCW being a bit forgotten despite being one of the first major Black world champions. Before that landmark win, however, Simmons was in the tag team Doom with Butch Reed.

Initially working under masks as Doom #1 and Doom #2, Reed and Simmons eventually unmasked and worked under their better-known names, defeating the Steiner Brothers for the Tag Team Championship.

3 The Varsity Club

Introduced in WCW in 1987, the amateur wrestling themed heel stable Varsity Club was composed of Mike Rotunda, Kevin Sullivan, “Dr. Death” Steve Williams and 2022 Hall of Famer Rick Steiner, among others. During their initial two-year run, the group captured various championships, including the NWA World Tag Team Championship.

In 1999, the group reformed in WCW with Steiner, Sullivan, and Rotunda, though they didn’t have the same in-ring success that they did during their initial run.

2 Ricky Steamboat & Shane Douglas

Shane Douglas is best associated with ECW in the minds of many fans, but “The Franchise” actually had several stints with WCW over the years. During his second stint, Douglas formed a tag team with 2009 Hall of Famer Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, and the two managed to dethrone Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes as Tag Team Champions at Clash of the Champions 21.

Their 105-day reign would end, however, at the hands of The Hollywood Blondes, Brian Pillman and Steve Austin.

1 Cactus Jack & Kevin Sullivan

Mick Foley would become a WWE Hall of Famer in 2013, but before his run with the company started in 1996, Foley would spend 1991 through 1994 in WCW as Cactus Jack. There, he ended up teaming with Kevin Sullivan and took part in a mega violent Tag Team Street Fight at Slamboree ‘94, defeating The Nasty Boys to become the new WCW World Tag Team Champions.

After 56 days would come Bash at the Beach ‘94, where the aforementioned Pretty Wonderful would beat Cactus and Sullivan for the belts.
